Cross-country Skiing in Vallelunga

Most appealing are the cross-country skiing trails in the Vallelunga valley, a side valley of Val Venosta. Nature in its purest state, this is what the solitary Vallelunga with its steep slopes has to offer. The glacier of the Palla Bianca mountain ridge is ideal terrain for those who love high alpine mountaineering and even ice climbing. At the upper end of the Vallelunga, there is the mountain peak of Palla Bianca, located at an altitude of 3,739 m close to the borders of Austria and Italy. What is particularly striking in Vallelunga is a unique rock formation, the so-called “Krampusloch”, which closely resembles a human being. Covered by alga and lichens, its color scheme is likewise impressive.

Although already national and international competitions took place on this diverse, high-altitude trail at a height of 1,912 m, it is still not overrun by cross-country skiers which makes it the perfect hide-away for professionals and amateurs alike.

Route description

The entrance to the trail is located at the car park in Melago. The trail can be used by classic and freestyle cross-country skiers. Refreshments are located close to the car park. Warm up with a hot drink at “Evi's Hittl” tavern. Toilets and a changing room are also available here. The small circular route leads from where the small river "Melager Bach" joins the "Karlinbach" stream via a trail back to Melago. The big circular route heads further out of the valley through the forest to Grub. The trail switches to the other side of the valley and returns across sunny meadows back to Melago. Continuing along the northern slope of the valley, the trail leads to the Melago Alm Alpine farm (1,970 m). It is also open in winter and offers a nice possibility to take a rest and the hut owner the chance to spoil you with South Tyrolean delicacies.

During La Venosta, the participants will follow the opposite way starting in Kapron and heading up to Melago Alm before circling back to Melago where the finish line awaits them after 30 km.
